ROANOKE CO., Va. - A Roanoke man is trying to raise awareness about the importance of beekeeping
We found out about the challenges beekeepers are facing.
“It's devastating. I walk out every day and they're like kids. You walk out every day to see how your kids are. You walk out every day to see how your hive is,” beekeeper Bill Dwyer said.
Dwyer's backyard is all abuzz with more than 80,000 honey bees.
He's been beekeeping for several years, and says he's starting to notice a decline.
“If I nudge here like this, she's not reacting at all,” Dwyer said. “She sick. When I was talking about colony collapse before, this is exactly what happens.
One of his colonies has more than 80,000 bees. While the other has less than 30,000. It's called Colony Collapse Disorder, and he thinks most of it has to do with pesticides used on plants.
