Now that you say that, I can remember you posting about that elsewhere. Or am I thinking of someone else? Care to refresh my mind before I try it. Thanks

I have a recipe for Iron/gall ink somewhere that uses enhanced vinegar instead of gall.

Sure, you need 2 cups of walnut hulls lightly crushed and seeped in an equal amount of boiling water for 2 hours. [mixed with corn oil and half as much 90% alcohol makes one hell of a wood stain!]
Strain and return to a boil in your paint can or whatever, you don't want to use a cooking pot! let go until it's 1/2 volume.
render down by boiling 2 cups of vinegar until its 1 cup, mix with the walnut render and add 2 1/2 tablespoons of iron dust from your grinder and let sit in a glass jar until the iron dust is just a cloudy bleech in the bottom of the jar, strain again and let air for a couple of days and add a pinch of bicarbonate [IN YOUR SINK] to kill the acid, it WILL foam like crazy, air some more until its thicker than water, then use on acid free paper, it eats up news print! ALSO, it takes a few minutes to dry so be careful.
the older it gets, the better it gets!

Anyone want the stain recipe?: Take the before mentioned Walnut renderings and add to 1/2 cup 0f corn oil and 1/4 cup of 90% alcohol that's been brought to a boil in a double boiler [NOT OVER OPEN FLAME! that's poor boy napalm!] combine and bottle, let cool before sealing. Shake well as being used. some wood workers still have that habit from using home made stains.
